DEEP Manufacturing and Fortius Metals Begin Multi-Material, Multi-Robot WAAM Development Project
DEEP Manufacturing and Fortius Metals have begun working on a multi-material cylinder produced using a synchronised multi-robot Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) system.
The project combines DEEP Manufacturing’s large-scale multi-robot additive manufacturing capability with Fortius’s expertise in thermal simulation and advanced wire development. Together, the teams are validating a complex multi-material build strategy for a US-based end-user.
The first phase of the programme focuses on producing a test print block, supported by simulation-driven toolpaths, thermal modelling, in-process monitoring and continuous process feedback throughout the build.
The project represents another step forward for multi-material WAAM. It demonstrates how advanced process control, software integration, and robotic manufacturing can support increasingly complex geometries and material combinations.
Fortius Metals specialises in simulation-led workflows and wire technologies designed to solve difficult welding and deposition challenges. Their modelling capability helps account for factors such as heat accumulation, distortion, and process instability before production begins.
DEEP Manufacturing is applying its expertise in robotic welding parameters, process optimisation, and real-time monitoring to translate development work into production-ready manufacturing capability.
Using synchronised multi-robot systems enables greater control over deposition strategy, build efficiency, and manufacturing scale. Combined with closed-loop monitoring and simulation feedback, this creates new opportunities for producing components intended for demanding operating environments.
The project is designed to explore what becomes possible when advanced simulation, specialist wire development, and industrial-scale WAAM capability are integrated into a single manufacturing workflow.
